Legionella control

Clean drinking and process water is of great importance to your organization. If the cold water is not fresh or too warm, there is a chance that the Legionella bacteria will develop excessively. Your guests or public then run the risk of serious pneumonia, Legionnaires’ disease. Since the outbreak among visitors to the Westfriese Flora in Bovenkarspel, much more attention has been paid to prevention. For certain buildings a periodic Legionella control is mandatory. But safe water is mandatory for everyone. What can you do to prevent infections?

Where does Legionella control start?

Since 2004, extra strict rules for Legionella prevention have applied to buildings with an extra high risk, the priority locations. These include hospitals, hotels and swimming pools. For non-priority locations with collective drinking water installations, the water supply systems fall under the general duty of care for good quality drinking water. Even then it is wise to take measures, but a more limited management package will suffice. Legionella control begins with a sample of drinking or process water. These water samples are analyzed for the number of Legionella bacteria present. The samples are tested in the accredited laboratory where our employees check them against the legal requirements.

Legionella exceedance

Compliance with laws and regulations by designers, construction companies, installers and managers of high-risk installations is a point of attention. Climate change is another possible cause of the national increase in the number of Legionella infections. We too regularly see the norm for Legionella bacteria in water samples exceeded. This is the case at 100 so-called colony-forming units (CFU) of Legionella bacteria per liter of water. We then immediately start a source investigation to find the cause and the next step is a plan of action.

Legionella management plan

Besides the Legionella control in the form of water samples, Marino as a BRL6010 certified company can also fully support you with risk analyses and management plans for Legionella prevention. We are specialized in drawing up a Legionella management plan. This is the central document for your (drinking) water system. We ensure that your company complies with the legal requirements for Legionella risk management according to the Drinking Water Act and the additional requirements from the assessment guideline BRL6010. We draw up a concise, practical report with photos that clarify the content. The well-organized logbook is completely digital and the control measures are now carried out using a smart app.
